What Is Stainless Steel Precision Strip Coil?
Precision strip coils are ultra-thin stainless steel strips produced with very tight tolerances in thickness, width, and surface finish. They are supplied in coil form for industries such as:
Electronics and semiconductors
Automotive connectors and sensors
Medical devices and surgical instruments
Springs and precision components
Because these coils are thin and slit into narrow widths, they are usually wound onto rolls, with the total length depending on thickness, coil weight, and width.
Typical Coil Length per Roll
The length of precision strip coils per roll varies depending on the strip’s thickness and width:
Ultra-thin gauges (0.02 – 0.1 mm):
Rolls can reach 5,000 – 20,000 meters per coil because of the small thickness.Thin gauges (0.1 – 0.5 mm):
Length per roll is usually 1,000 – 5,000 meters.Medium gauges (0.5 – 1.0 mm):
Coils often range 300 – 1,000 meters per roll.Thicker precision strip (>1.0 mm):
Coil length may drop to 100 – 500 meters depending on width and maximum coil weight.
Factors Affecting Coil Length
Thickness of the Strip
The thinner the material, the longer the strip length can be wound into a single coil.
Example: 0.05 mm strip can exceed 10,000 meters, while 1.0 mm strip may only be a few hundred meters.
Width of the Strip
Narrower strips (e.g., <50 mm) result in longer coil lengths per weight because less material is used per turn.
Coil Weight Limits
Standard coil weights range from 500 kg to 2,000 kg, depending on manufacturer and customer requirement.
Coil length is directly related to weight, since a heavier roll allows more strip to be wound.
Material Density
Stainless steel has a density of about 7.9 g/cm³, which influences how much material can fit into a roll of given weight.
Customer Specifications
Some buyers request jumbo coils (heavier, longer) to reduce downtime during processing.
Others request small coils for easier handling in precision applications.
Example Calculation
Let’s take a stainless steel strip with these specifications:
Thickness: 0.2 mm
Width: 100 mm
Coil weight: 1,000 kg
Step 1: Cross-sectional area of strip
0.2 mm × 100 mm = 20 mm² = 0.2 cm²
Step 2: Weight per meter
Volume of 1 m strip = 0.2 cm² × 100 cm = 20 cm³
Weight = 20 cm³ × 7.9 g/cm³ = 158 g (≈ 0.158 kg per meter)
Step 3: Coil length
1,000 kg ÷ 0.158 kg/m ≈ 6,330 meters per roll
Industry Practice
Standard practice is to supply rolls between 500 – 2,000 meters for industrial users.
For super-thin strips, manufacturers can provide extra-long coils exceeding 10 km.
Medical and electronics sectors often prefer smaller coils for easier handling and tighter tolerance checks.
